Oh dear, oh dear, this was boring. I certainly hadn't expected an action movie, but I had hoped to learn a bit more about this unique and also frightening period in Zimbabwe. That probably won't happen, because it is based on the memoirs of Bobo, the main character.
First, a few good things: the main character acts well. She is particularly annoying, but that is probably close to the truth. Furthermore, you see some beautiful images of Zimbabwe that are also captured in a creative way at times (good camerawork). Finally, it is remarkable to experience such a frightening time through the eyes of a child: she is not afraid. For her, this is just normal. And she takes life as it comes, without judgment. She also has no sense of right or wrong. That provided a unique perspective.
But then there is what doesn't work well. Absolutely nothing happens during the first hour. And I mean absolutely nothing. You watch for an hour a child who is terribly bored, neglected by her parents, and asks incessant questions that go unanswered. To make it bearable, they added a voice-over (if you need a voice-over like that, it might be a sign that the book isn't quite as suitable for a film adaptation...). Then, over halfway through, something suddenly happens after all. That part is a tad less boring, but still... yawn... not very much happens. You see how the family members deal with the bad news of the election results, and that was it.
For me, this is a complete film adaptation failure. The book is probably much better, but what I saw is not movie material. A waste of my evening, so not recommended. 1.5 stars for the acting performance of the young lead actress and the good camerawork.
