Wischnewsky has difficulties with love, with the love of the ladies, but most of all with himself. This is covered before, during and after the rehearsals of Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' in a city theater somewhere in the GDR, which Wischnewsky has hired as guest director for this production. The test appearances are problematic, especially for Wischnewsky, for whom work and private life always fade into each other. His old love Vera sings the part of Donna Anna and she wants to win him over one last time, while Wischnewsky is in love with Beate, the interpreter of Donna Elvira. When both women suddenly show solidarity with each other, the director is left out in the cold...
