Die Frau vom Checkpoint Charlie plot

Spring 1982: Sara Bender lives with her daughters Silvia (11) and Bine (9) in Erfurt. Sara decides to marry her boyfriend Peter Koch, whom she has known for years. She has only one wish: She would like to have Johannes - her father, who lives in the free West - at the wedding. During the trip to the GDR he has a serious accident. The wedding is postponed for the time being and Sara tries everything to visit her father in the hospital. However, the GDR will not let her go, because she is registered in the files as an enemy of the state. Too often she has expressed her opinion about the communist system and has caused unrest. When her father dies a short time later, her world collapses. Now she knows for sure: She wants to leave the GDR with her children forever - with or without Peter. Her request to leave the GDR is again rejected, and Sara makes the decision to leave the country illegally, without realizing what this decision means for her future.
