Der Stille Ozean plot

The doctor Ascher makes a mistake during his work and one person is killed. He moves and hopes to live in anonymity in a small village in Austria. In that village, a veritable plague of people who become rabid. Ascher treats one person who has been bitten, giving away his true profession. Then a murder is committed and the hunt for the killer is started by the villagers. The whole situation prompts Ascher to ask himself why he fled after making a mistake. Should he help the population find the killer or should he help the killer?
