Der Letzte Postillon vom St. Gotthard plot

Flüelen, 1879. The steamer "Winkelried" crosses the Vierwaldstätter Lake and takes passengers across in front of the Gotthard carriage. Coachman Johannes Zgraggen (Adolf Manz) will be on his last ride in the near future, however, as the Western Swiss engineer Louis Favre (Otto Boßhard) proposed an ambitious plan for a railway tunnel several years ago. Since 1872, the construction of the longest railway tunnel in the world between Göschenen and Airolo has been underway. The project will be completed in 1882. For the time being, travelers still have to be brought to Italy via an old mountain pass.
