Free adaptation of William Shakespeare's play The Mechant of Venice. The young nobleman Bassanio (Harry Liedtke) borrows money through his friend Antonio to impress his dream woman, Portia (Henny Porten). All of Antonio's wealth is in his ships, so he in turn borrows this money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock (Werner Krauss). Shylock still has some things to settle with Antonio and includes a special clause in the agreement: if Antonio cannot pay back the money, Shylock is entitled to a pound of flesh from Antonio's body. Then Antonio gets the bad news that his ships have been wrecked. He can't repay the loan to Shylock because of this...
