De Stille Oceaan plot

The film describes the mental decline of Marian Winters (Josée Ruiter), a journalist who has been working in South America for years, where she gradually comes to the conclusion that her articles do not contribute to improving the lot of the people. The violent death of her lover, the resistance fighter Miguel, intensifies the feelings of powerlessness. She travels to the parental home in the Netherlands, where her father has just passed away. Before leaving, she marries, in a last act of solidarity, Enrique, a comrade of Miguel's. The sole purpose of this marriage is to obtain a residence permit for Enrique. She leaves him on arrival in the Netherlands and refuses to live with him in order to secure the permit. After the loss of Miguel and her father, Marian focuses completely on her mentally handicapped brother Emil, who is in an institution. All her frustrated ambitions center around this guiltless moron, with whom she regularly hangs out by the river around the house.
