David Bek, an Armenian folk hero, led the long struggle for liberation from the Persian conquerors in the 18th century. This led to the killing and expulsion of many Muslims from eastern Turkish villages. Later, he led battles against the Ottomans, who were trying to conquer the Transcaucasus.
