Das Riesenrad plot
Three generations of the noble Hill family from Austria are traced from the Habsburg Empire to the early years after World War II. Rudolf Hill is considered the black sheep in a dynasty of clockmakers from Vienna. As an officer, Rudolf is wounded in the First World War. Still, a promising future lies ahead for him. He takes over his father's factory and marries young Elizabeth, the daughter of a bookseller. The turbulent 1920s also leave their marks on Rudolf and Elisabeth. When Elizabeth enjoys life too much and gives in to her need for pleasure, a marital crisis ensues. However, both manage to weather this crisis. In 1940, Rudolf and Elisabeth suffered a severe blow due to the loss of their only son.
