Thérèse is a maid in the household of Countess Meta von W., with whom she is secretly in love. She must see to it that her sister Magdalena comes under the influence of a cult led by a devilish cult leader. Together with priest Thomas Pöschl she helps to free people from these demons. The priest enlists the help of the countess, who, together with Thérèse, visits farms and villages to avert the disaster. As a result, a bond of an unnatural character develops between the Countess and Thérèse, which was a great sin in Austria at the time.
