It is spring 1941. The Japanese troops prepare for a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. At the same time, a number of seemingly unrelated things are happening in different parts of Japan. A young man, Goichi Odajima, is assigned to Tokyo as a second lieutenant. In Kyoto, a student, Takashi Egami, is taken to the police station on suspicion of plotting against the Empire. Tokyo celebrates the wedding of Kokichi Kobayashi and Miyo Arai, which is also a farewell party for Kokichi, who has been drafted into the army. Through the lives of these three young men, whose destinies are drastically changed by the war, it becomes clear what war really is.
