One night in 1950, a passenger train kills a man. It's Orzechowski, an experienced engineer. An investigation follows. Testimonials take place in the form of flashbacks. Tuszka, the station master, believes Orzechowski was a saboteur, and at least one other person confirms this. Zapora, the young engineer on the train that hit Orzechowski, gives a more complicated testimony about the dead man. He was persistent, proud, imperious, critical of him and other younger workers. The signalman at the intersection where Orzechowski died also testifies. The truth is not so easy to find...
