Crossings plot
It is 1939 and steel magnate Nick Burnham is called to President Roosevelt. During his business trip to Europe, he is tasked with gathering information about Hitler's threats to attack Europe. When Nick leaves the White House; he bumps into the French ambassador and his wife; Armand and Liane Devillier; on. The next day, Nick and Liane's paths cross again; when they are both on board the Queen Mary with their partners heading for Europe. When Nick expresses his love for Liane; his wife throws herself into the arms of another. In Paris, Armand discovers that his son Robert is also traveling through Europe and has fallen in love with a Jewish girl; Natasha Freilich; that has sought his help in securing her family. Armand then asks his father if he wants to help him with that. But Armand is helpless; because he has been asked to spy for the French and he is absolutely not allowed to talk about that with his family. He sends Liane to relatives in America. During her boat trip, drowning people are picked up. Among them is Nick.
