For Joy Stanhope, the so-called 'Coming Out' party is the highlight of her calendar. Although she is involved with the highly eligible bachelor Jimmy Wolverton, she is in fact in love with Chris Hansen, a violinist in a jazz band and the son of poor Swedish immigrants. She keeps her relationship with Hansen a secret, knowing that her parents would not approve. They even pressure her to go on a date with Wolverton, which infuriates Hansen. After an argument, they get back together later that night and soon after she discovers she is pregnant.
