Rock solid acting from Woodard and Hodge unfortunately can't elevate Chukwu's directorial debut above "passable", largely due to the mediocre script; also by the director. Yet another story about a tough profession in which personal emotions are not allowed to be a factor, but slowly but surely it starts to break. Visually unremarkable otherwise, which is more common in prison dramas. The unanimous critical praise is exaggerated, but the potential for a better successor to this director is apparent; the discipline is undeniable. 2.5*

My 6,000th vote, by the way.

Films have often been made about the psychological effects of being involved in carrying out the death penalty, but in her second full-length film, director/screenwriter Chukwu tries to tell the story of a prisoner convicted of murder from multiple perspectives about the last chance for leniency. . Prison warden Bernadine Williams [Alfre Woodard] hides her emotion behind a facade of business, while her husband Jonathan [Wendell Pierce] tries desperately to break through that facade. Death row inmate Anthony Woods [Aldis Hodge] clings to the hope his lawyer Marty Lumetta [Richard Schiff] offers him, but Marty seems to be losing his fighting spirit. The attention to a guard, the prison chaplain and the victim's next of kin is special and Alex Castillo and Danielle Brooks impress as respectively a death row inmate whose execution goes disastrously and Anthony's girlfriend who visits him for the first time since his arrest. Superbly written and acted, but both Chuwku and Woodard save the best for the last in a perfect symbiosis of screenplay, acting and direction.

Sombre drama about a prison director who oversees the executions of prisoners sentenced to death. “Just doing my job”, but that does not bother her. A beautiful role by Alfre Woodard, reliable as ever. The close-up of her tear-stained face lingers for a long time.
