"Based on the classic coming of age memoir by Laurie Lee"
In 1918, Annie Lee's husband works for the war office and leaves his family. The devoted mother Annie Lee takes her stepdaughters and her own children to live in the idyllic Gloucestershire countryside. Her youngest son Loll is ill. They give shelter to a young deserter who hides in the woods until he is captured. At school, Loll and his classmates are terrorized by the teacher Crabby until Spadge Hopkins literally puts her in her place. In a world that balances between tradition and modernity, the Loll grows up and slowly but surely becomes a man.
