While roaming a poor neighborhood, wealthy heir Christian Wahnschaffe saves a prostitute from the cruelty of her pimp who is also her brother. At his house he meets Ruth, who cares for the poor. Wahnschaffe takes Ruth's charity as a model for herself. He burns his money and joins the poor. He gives the seriously ill prostitute a valuable pearl necklace that belongs to his mother. After the girl's death, Ruth gets her hands on the jewelry. Shortly after, she is murdered and there seems to be a clear culprit. But Christian has his own suspicions...
