Charlatan plot

Jan Mikolasek was an herbalist who devoted his life to caring for the sick, despite the immense obstacles he faced in his private and public life. Born at the beginning of the twentieth century, Mikolasek achieved fame and fortune with unorthodox methods of treatment to cure a wide variety of diseases. Even before World War II, the healer gained reputation and wealth in Czechoslovakia, both during the Nazi occupation and under Communist rule. Both regimes wanted to use his skills and offer protection in return. But what would be the cost to maintain this status if the tide turned?

Jan Mikolášek [Ivan Trojan] discovers at a young age that he has special gifts that allow him to diagnose and treat physical ailments in time. He decides to become an apprentice to Mühlbacherová [Jaroslave Pokorná], a middle-aged woman who can diagnose any ailment in time using a bottle of urine and who knows how to successfully treat it in an unconventional way. This makes Mikolášek the target of the Czech authorities, who label him as a charlatan and do everything they can to tarnish his reputation: after all, the people must trust The State. Beautifully filmed and excellently directed, but screenwriter Epstein fails to provide more insight into the personality behind the legend, which means it never really becomes compelling.

Remarkable film with an insight into herbal medicine. Something that was and is continuously under fire due to the pressure of Western medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. The fact that he got all 29 diagnoses right in a test by the Nazis is astonishing. So much for the true story that also comes forward in the film. The acting is modest but touches on some precarious issues in terms of ethics, linked to the ego of Mikosalek, well played by Trojan. Furthermore, another familiar insight into the construction and functioning of totalitarian regimes. All in all an interesting film.
