In Chariots of Fire, we follow two athletes, the Scottish Eric Liddell and the Jewish Harold Abrahams, as they prepare for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. The movie is rather slow, which is strange for a movie about running. In addition, I found it difficult to bond with the main characters; their characters were not developed enough in my opinion. And then there's the irritating synthesizer music by Vangelis, which I found absolutely unsuitable for a film set in the 1920s.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1981. Strange, because I really think that much better movies were made that year. 3*

The film begins (and ends) with a beautiful scene of runners practicing on the beach. The music of this film is also beautiful and means a plus. In addition, I can only reflect that at that time athletics was a sport peculiar to the better circles. It was amateurism, for the sake of honour, and the better caste had time to prepare; the rest were tired of working.

For the rest there was little tension and there was no real sympathy with this film.

Boring.

Incredibly boring, even. Apparently also an Oscar winner. That explains something. The music of the recently deceased Vangelis is iconic. It's not necessarily my thing, but it is very recognizable and that makes for an opening scene that is known as a classic.

Furthermore, this is a gray sparrow. A dull and dusty drama. After the movie I had a hard time coming up with the names of 3 characters; there is no one who comes out well. That may be due to the acting, but I'm more thinking of a script that can't bring any panache to the film. The movie feels dead. The sports scenes are just as deadly shot: the trick with the slow motion is worked out very quickly. It is striking that some characters have an extremely remarkable walking technique, in which their heads dangle loosely from their necks. Times change, who knows, it was the fashion in 1924.
