A rather lame collection of short films. There is a nice segment here and there, but the vast majority are not really interesting. I also thought some of them looked very similar. Of course the makers were given the same 'assignment', but a little more creativity would have been nice. Moreover, the films are too short to make an impression and the film as a whole is too long to remain interesting. Off the top of my head, I can only remember that a number of shots and the videos of Kitano, Cronenberg and Von Trier were worth watching. I think this collection would have turned out better if the number of directors had been halved and the running time of the films doubled.

2.5*

It's striking how few good videos there are. Perhaps 3 minutes is not enough for a video, but still, there are plenty of good shorts. And some directors in this collection also prove that it can be done well, sometimes purely with atmosphere creation (Depardon, Tsai), sometimes with a funny plot (Polanski). Overall 2.5*.

A lot of notable directors are joining forces to make an anthology film for Cannes with the cinema as the main theme. The task is to direct a short film of only 3 minutes long and admittedly, that is quite a complex task to deliver quality. However, you expect the names involved in this project to be able to handle it effortlessly, but in the end only Lars von Trier, Alejandro G. Iñárritu and the Dardenne brothers can count on high marks. Some directors still deliver solid entertainment to a degree (Gus van Sant, Bille August, Michael Cimino & Walter Salles), but there are many segments in To Each His Cinema that seem to have been directed by a bunch of egocentric one-hit wonders. David Cronenberg, for example, gives the biggest possible middle finger to his audience and delivers by far the worst part of this whole. Finally, there are also directors who simply disappoint (David Lynch makes too much use of cheap computer effects and the Coen brothers don't get much further than lame humor), making the film quite difficult to get through and a disappointing end result.

The average was 2.2*, rounded down. I'm glad I was finally able to find the film, but the anthology films from festivals are being put on hold for now. I honestly get the feeling that some directors have thrown their hats at it.
