Cerca de la Ciudad plot

José is a priest placed in a small parish in the suburbs of Madrid. When he arrives there, he learns that the previous parish priest has died and that he will face a difficult task if he is to take over his office. Ramón, the sexton, informs him of all the misery and depravity that prevails among the inhabitants of the area.
