Careers plot

Angry at not getting the promotion he feels he deserved, Victor Gromaire, a young French magistrate in Cochin, China, plans a trip to the capital. He wants to complain to the governor of the French colony and thus circumvent his immediate superior, alias the president. Meanwhile, Carouge, a prominent lawyer in Paris, tells Victor's wife Hélène that her husband is still an insignificant civil servant because she is too decent.
