I didn't think it was that bad. The story about the buffalo hunt is quite interesting, there are some quiet parts, but there are also scenes that make an impression. I thought the images of the herd of buffalo were impressive, and overall it just looks good. The cast also plays quite well, even Cage doesn't do a bad job. Well worth a pass.

I give 2.5 for the beautiful images in the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, for the rest I just found the film extremely annoying and boring, but that's just me from the films in which Cage has acted in recent years....

Well-made and interesting film about an important time in the United States: the period when the number of buffalo fell from 60 million to 300 in just 20 years (!) due to exorbitant hunting.

The film is not perfect. I think Cage does a good job, but he is not ideal for this role (casting could have been better). The other roles are well cast and the acting is okay (Cage ultimately carries the film). The film music is also often 'off' (which is often the case with modern westerns.... they don't really know what to do with it because you can't put an Ennio Morricone imitation under every film). And you could criticize that not that much happens in the film. But that depends mainly on your expectations.

The film depicts the life of a buffalo (=bison) hunter in the mid-19th century. This includes the hardship, the risks, the tension in the group and the economic turning point that one is confronted with. All of this is filmed at exceptionally beautiful locations in Montana. Add good acting to that and for me that is more than enough for a fun and interesting movie night. But this is not a standard western with bounty hunters, Indians, train robberies, crooks etc. The tension is also not artificially increased with unrealistic events. It gives an extremely realistic picture of the hardships. It certainly does not reach the level of films such as The Revenant (2015) in terms of intensity of survival, but it is certainly good enough. At times the film rushes things a bit and could have taken a bit more time, but I don't think the filmmakers dared to aim for a longer running time.

All in all a film that I found to be better than expected (also considering the too (?) low scores on Moviemeter and IMDB). I can recommend the film if you go to see it with the right expectations. 3.5 stars.
