Bubble plot
"Another Steven Soderbergh Experience"
Alone and isolated from the rest of the world, loyal employees Martha and Kyle work closely together at a doll factory in a small village. They are friends, despite their big age difference. Then a new colleague arrives: the young single mother Rose. Martha finds it difficult for Kyle and Rose to build a relationship of their own.

To me, Bubble was primarily known for its experiment in distribution. Released simultaneously in cinemas, on DVD, and online. Truly innovative at the time, and that did have repercussions. Nevertheless, the film itself never really appealed to me.
And let's be honest, it isn't exactly grand. It is one of those small projects that Soderbergh liked to squeeze in between his big films, if only to see if he could create something with non-professional actors and without film sets. A glimpse into the everyday. It succeeds in that respect, but it is not as if this kind of cinema didn't exist before, or that Soderbergh offers a truly surprising look at lives in an economically disadvantaged environment. What managed to captivate me nonetheless was, surprisingly enough, the casting. Not so much the acting itself, but the choice of faces and the actors' appearances, and their jaded expressions, created a melancholic atmosphere that hit the mark.
Nice to have seen it once, and the short length is a good choice. However, I don't consider it one of Soderbergh's best.

A small project by a great director. The film is slow and minimalist, and that fits exactly what needs to be told. The gloom and futility come across well, partly due to the virtually emotionless and somewhat awkward characters. On the one hand, this creates an unsettling feeling; on the other, it is actually very realistic. The visualization of the factory is beautiful for the atmosphere.
It is certainly not a mystery, and there is no real suspense. After the murder, a small police story seems to develop, but it is actually quite clear how things play out. Consequently, the film ends somewhat haphazardly and clumsily, but oh well, what more is there for us to see?

A marginal snack from director Steven Soderbergh, consisting of a cast of non-professional actors and a minimal plot. Atmospheric enough and the plot meanders along reasonably pleasantly, but ultimately, this is really quite meager.
