Native to the South of America, Jane Richards is a young fourth-grade teacher who has a problem in her classroom with 11-year-old CT Young, a somewhat retarded boy whose pride has made him a stubborn rebel and a big liar. . However, Jane believes in him and discovers his interest in nature when he spends hours observing a caterpillar in a stump until it develops into a cocoon. CT is very attached to his family and also to little Tanya, who adores him. When Tanya, despite Dr. Mitchell's best efforts to save her, dies of pneumonia, the devastated CT stays away from school.
