When I start a film of this length, I'm always curious if I can stay fascinated by it. That is certainly the case here, even with a political leaning that I prefer less. The film has clear chapters, beautifully presented, and excellent acting.
Nice how the trial of the conviction of the Russian spy coincides with the installation of the American spy pilots. It's a bit of a shame that in a few minutes, on their very first mission, something immediately goes wrong, the plane is shot down and the spy is captured. That felt just a bit too much 'for the story', instead of a logical progression. Especially since it takes a lot of time.
Considering it's a true story makes it more interesting. But also that I would have expected a certain twist at the end. Actually, it's quite a straightforward film. The ending is therefore appropriately 'All's well that ends well'-American, including what has become of them text. But all in all a great drama-thriller that remains fascinating despite its length.

The script was written by the Coen brothers. But it's still a vintage Spielberg, with Tom Hanks in a beautiful low-key role. Beautiful image of the time, especially the images of Berlin at the time of the construction of the wall are atmospheric. Spielberg couldn't contain himself at the end, which makes it all a bit bombastic (that music!) and sentimental, apparently that doesn't help Coen brother.

Bridge of Spies is extremely solid. That is why I share the opinion that this is in fact little new under the sun: real film lovers will certainly have seen a film like this. Tom Hanks also plays a role that is quite in line with many other roles he has played. I wonder if he isn't now the actor with the most biographical roles to his name.

Still, I thought the movie was definitely worth watching. Despite the long running time, the film managed to keep my attention almost constantly. Spielberg ensures that it all remains clear and there is at times (especially during the part in Berlin) some tension. I also felt involved with the characters, but that's also because the cast is in good shape. Besides Hanks, I also found Mark Rylance in particular very convincing.

The film tells a story that is based on true events and does it really well. Those who are waiting for a film full of surprises will probably be disappointed, but those looking for an atmospheric thriller with Berlin at the time of the Cold War as the setting can indulge themselves with this.

3.5*
