Two brothers from a wealthy family express their desires in very different ways. Dmitry relies on his intuition and emotions, while his brother Ivan embraces intelligence and logic. Their father is a complaining, self-centered pleasure-seeker, who whines about the changed times, but does nothing to adjust. Unable to compromise, the three men leave it to the church or state to solve their problems.
