Rita [Saoirse Ronan] takes advantage of the British evacuation plan for children to bring her son George [Elliott Heffernan] to safety, while she stays behind in London with her father [Paul Weller]. But George wants to be with his mother and jumps off the train. He is now dependent on his own instincts and the help of others to find his mother. The return journey is complicated by the bombing. The scenes with Ronan and Heffernan are promising, but the screenplay consists of a series of isolated incidents. The reconstructions of the Blitz are impressive, but Heffernan hardly manages to arouse sympathy with his weak, colorless performance. Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke as a Fagin-like plunderer and his sneaky henchman in this uneven and therefore at times downright boring war drama full of unnecessary scenes with which McQueen feels he has to emphasize the diversity of London during the war years.

Mediocre and mostly boring. McQueen can film. Like the bombers gliding over the water, that scene with a long shot in which George flees from a pier from falling bombs, that shot in the theater in which everyone stands still waiting for the bomb (with a nice swinging tracking shot before that) and then the tour through that theater that has been bombed to pieces or just the first scene with that snake and the noise and chaos. All excellently done. Only the main story could never captivate me and that is partly due to the flat performances of Heffernan but also of Ronan, whom I still hold in high regard.

Many sidesteps are interesting in content and McQueen also says something about the division and racism within the UK. That is an interesting contrast given the evil that was fought in that war, but if that wasn't clear yet, it is at least literally stated once more by one of the characters. At such moments the film doesn't work. Also that gang of thieves does not fit in terms of tone at all. 2.0*.

The film suddenly comes straight to the point with an impressive inferno in London. It will never be this hot again, but we do understand immediately why the British took such draconian measures to separate children from their parents. The fear of a German invasion was so great that road signs were removed or deliberately incorrectly indicated.

Saoirse Ronan is always a pleasure to watch and also gives her best here. Furthermore, we are dealing with a refined road movie with the adventures of little George. Content-wise perhaps a bit lacking, but that is technically skillfully made up for with the experience of McQueen.
