Wow, what a grandiose spectacle this is and it really is not inferior to the Heston version from 1959. In fact, due to the slightly shorter playing time (still over 2 hours) the story continues smoothly and there is not a single moment that is boring . The galley scenes and the chariot scenes stand out, of course, and are really well made. Very nice to see those massive scenes. That's always more fun and impressive than a CGI audience . By the way, you have to take the biblical story about the life of Jesus for granted, it certainly didn't bother me.

At the time one of the greatest productions of all time. A budget of 4 million dollars was astronomical for the time and despite the great success, the film was not profitable at the time.

Nevertheless, the film was groundbreaking for its time and the many mass scenes it contains still impress even today. The chariot racing scene is also sublimely portrayed.

Ben-Hur is almost 90 years old and unfortunately it shows. The film is without sound and texts are displayed in frame bars. This does take the pace out of the film somewhat and for generations who are used to sound films, this film will be quite a sit. She is also mostly in black and white and the acting is quite exuberant. As a result, this version from 1925 will only appeal to true film enthusiasts today.

But if you judge the film purely on the time it was released, then you can only conclude that Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a visual masterpiece, which nevertheless had a considerable influence on films that came after, not least the 1959 version starring Charlton Heston.

The 1959 version with a record number of Academy Awards (Titanic and Lord of the Rings also have 11, but Ben-Hur had fewer categories) and after Gone with the wind the most successful film of all time if you count inflation . Not bad for a remake. The book from 1880 was a bestseller and a little later the theater version also became a huge success. After the short film at the beginning of the last century, you also had this film classic from 1925. The most expensive 'silent film' and you can say that it helped put MGM on the map and had an enormous influence on later films. The list of extras that would later become known (from Clark Gable and Harold Lloyd to Carole Lombard and Douglas Fairbanks) is impressive.

Ok, the film has the necessary prestige and influence in film history. Is the movie good too? Of course you have to like the style in 1925 that every film from that time has to deal with. Especially an acting style that we are less used to, especially with a drama like Ben-Hur. Perhaps with the science of possibilities at the beginning of the last century, the large scenes make an impression. The story is as good as the one from 1959 and many scenes are quite worthwhile. For those who are not so bothered by the acting method of that time (people did not yet see the difference between acting on stage where you have to act great, and the way to do it in front of a camera) will enjoy this quite a bit. The 1959 film is better, but it owes so much to this 1925 film.
