"The past has a life of its own."
1873. After 18 years he comes back into her life, a man who was a slave on the same plantation. She apologizes in advance for her house, and when he takes the first step inside, he notices that the house is haunted. Her late oldest daughter never grew up and can throw objects when she's moody. Not long after his arrival, however, the deceased daughter keeps quiet, and her place in the house is taken by a stranger who presents herself. Because of her interest in stories of the past and disadvantaged development, she is also a welcome addition to the life of both the mother and the still living mother.
