High school student Aristotle 'Ari' Mendoza lives in Texas in the year 1985. A chance meeting with Dante in the swimming pool leads to a close bond. Both boys are in an identity crisis, partly due to their Mexican-American origins. Despite their differences, their friendship transcends the earthly plane.
