At the end of the Second World War, two young boys Antoine and Julien think they see the Americans in the distance and go to tell the story in their village. "Les Américains arrive". Everyone is full of enthusiasm to greet the arriving column. But... it is the Germans who enter the village. And the mayor waving the American flag is shot dead. The two boys have to flee because everyone is angry with them. That is the opening to a particularly beautiful drama, in which the senselessness of the war is depicted in a very sensitive way. There is also no shortage of humor. Especially when they find a deserted German soldier who is on the run just like them, they first help him and gradually a close bond of friendship grows, you start to sympathize with both the boys and the deserter.

The end of the film, when they arrive in a ghost town, is really dramatic and gripping. After "Le Grand Chemin", "Après la Guerre" is another jewel in the crown of the oeuvre of the relatively unknown cinematographer Jean-Loup Hubert. A picture that equals the quality of a masterpiece such as "Jeux Interdits" and for me the best French film I have seen in the last fifty years. No one is as strong at making subtle rural dramas as the French....

In addition to the strong screenplay, the sublime performances are also striking, especially from the two boys, but also from Richard Bohringer and the soundtrack is also a gem.

A big *5*

Impressive film about the last days of the Second World War in France, where the population is waiting for the Americans, while the Germans have not yet left. We are talking about August 1944 and seen through the eyes of two young (half) brothers, who are on the run and came across a wounded German soldier, with whom they spend a while. Especially in the beginning it is reminiscent of a youth film, but in the last part a lot of horrible things happen, because war is a dirty business. At times the film grips you, but is also somewhat unbalanced. Also a bit dated. But well acted, especially by the boys.
