Lady Slane (Wendy Hiller) must put her life in order when her husband, once viceroy and prime minister in India, dies. However, her sons already have plans for her remaining life because: "she never had to make any decisions for herself during her life." Lady Slane, on the other hand, sells her house and moves to Hampstead, thanks to the help of friend Bucktrout (Maurice Denham). While her relatives compete for the inheritance, Lady Slane advises her great-granddaughter Deborah and works in her garden. Then Mr. Fitzgeorge comes to visit, an old acquaintance from India, who confides that she is the love of his life and has been for fifty years.
