Agnès de Rien plot

The wealthy landowner, Charles de Chaligny, has died. His widow, who is half mad, settles in a dilapidated castle somewhere in the province, together with her daughter Alix and her son-in-law Carlo, an alcoholic. Her youngest son is a painter and works in Paris. He has the ambition to paint portraits, but is in need of money. He decides to send his young wife Agnès to his mother to ask her for some money.
