A Soldier's Oath plot
During the battle, Pierre Duval, a French soldier, encounters the mortally wounded Count de Morave. Before his death, the count begs Pierre to hand over some family jewels and papers to Count Raoul de Reyntiens. At home, Pierre places the jewels in a box that also contains a necklace given to his wife, Margot, by Duke D'Auberg. As he steals the box, Lazare, a war reporter who witnessed Pierre's encounter with the count, attacks and kills Margot. Pierre is found guilty of the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment, but is pardoned after a perilous rescue from prison. Mavis, his daughter, adopted by the duke, falls in love with the poor vicomte but is wooed by Lazare, now posing as the Count de Morave.
