A Ship Comes In plot
Peter Pleznik, a Hungarian immigrant, arrives in the US, determined to make a better life for his family. He takes a job as a janitor in a federal building and quickly applies to become a US citizen, despite the protests of his friend Sokol, an anarchist. Five years later, Pleznic finally receives his papers, with the help of Judge Gresham. To show his thanks, Pleznik asks his wife to bake a cake for the judge. Sokol removes the cake from the box and replaces it with a bomb, which explodes, killing Gresham. Pleznik is charged, and while he is in prison, his son - who is enlisted in the army - is killed overseas. Despite these mishaps, Pleznik's confidence in his new country remains strong.
