A Dog of Flanders plot

In 19th-century Belgium, penniless young artist Nello Daas saves a dog from a violent peddler and trains it to pull his frail grandfather Jehan's milk cart. Nello is in love with the beautiful Maria Cogez, but her aristocratic father forbids him to see her. When Nello sells one of his drawings of Maria to the wealthy Pieter Vanderkloot, the latter pretends it is his own and enters a prestigious scholarship competition.
