After the marriage of her niece Rosemary, Anglo-Indian schoolteacher Violet Stoneham leads a lonely life in her one-room flat at 36 Chowringhee Lane in Calcutta, with only a cat for company. She is happy when a former student, Nandita Roy, comes to visit her and brings her friend Samaresh Moitra. Samaresh is an author and loves the solitude of Violet's flat. He would like to write his new novel there and Violet agrees.
