Zwart IJs plot
Zwart IJs is a documentary about the relationship between skating on natural ice and the Orthodox Christian Netherlands. Many Dutch long-distance skaters come from the Christian countryside. Skating is a sport that is practiced here with enthusiasm and with the approval of the church, as long as there is no skating on Sundays. But modern times and professionalization are putting the traditions under pressure. Can top sport be reconciled with religion? Zwart IJs follows René Ruitenberg, Geert Jan van der Wal and three generations of the Klompmaker family in a year when there was almost an Elfstedentocht on Sunday.
