Zonen van Suriname plot
In this documentary an attempt is made to unravel the background of the Surinamese December murders in 1982. The makers expressly intended the documentary not as a historical reconstruction, but as a personal retrospective of the relatives. In a classic form of talking heads, a chronological structure and archive material, the film first sketches the atmosphere of Suriname from its independence in 1975 to the military coup of 1980. Then the eyewitnesses tell how their relatives, critics of the new regime, were taken to Fort Zeelandia and that they later had to identify the fifteen dead in the morgue. Not the (as yet unpunished) culprits, but the victims are central to Roelofs' approach to this not yet closed chapter of recent Surinamese history.
