Yingji Binan Changsuo plot
When Beijing was chosen as the host city for the 2008 Olympics in 2001, the Chinese government went on a 'demolition tour' through the streets of the capital. Everything that stood in the way of future sports facilities, newly built hotels or infrastructure was removed. Consent from the owners or residents was not sought. At the time, Ni Yulan was working as a business lawyer for a large commercial firm. Struck by the injustice, Yulan decided to take on the judicial defense of the injured citizens. This decision cost her dearly: she was arrested, tortured, imprisoned and her house was destroyed. As a result of the abuse, Ni Yulan became an invalid. Now she lives on the street with her husband, in a tent next to a busy road.
