Yallah! Underground plot
Before, during and after the Arab Spring, documentary maker Farid Eslam followed a number of artists from the underground scene in the Middle East. His film is about young, progressive musicians and artists from different countries who call for social change in their work. Like the Jordanian rapper Ostaz Samm, who talks about his politically oriented lyrics and the problems his generation faces. Palestinian visual artist Amer Shomali argues that his work has more impact than the actions of politicians because he has a stronger vision. The film presents a more optimistic picture than we are used to from cities such as Amman, Cairo, Haifa and Ramallah. Although it also becomes clear that the critical artists still encounter a lot of opposition.
