While We Watched plot

Independent journalism is under great pressure all over the world, and India is also tumbling into the abyss. Journalist Ravish Kumar, the face of news channel NDTV, struggles to survive as he and his colleagues are hit by advancing fake news, falling ratings and budget cuts. But as the news landscape recedes, the ground disappears beneath his feet. In this portrait of a news editor, the camera follows the tormented Kumar for two years at editorial meetings, on reportage and during TV broadcasts.

Ravish Kumar is the anchorman of NDTV, pretty much the last moderate journalistic voice in a country that is causing more polarization due to a wave of nationalism (and nationalist propaganda). Due to his fame, Kumar is a constant target of bullying, intimidation and death threats. Kumar perseveres in his work, but cannot do it without his team. Rarely has the value and importance of free journalism for democracy been so clearly stated. Disturbing, relevant, but also a bit manipulative.

Unfortunately, always relevant sketch of an increasingly authoritarian and populist society, in which enemy images are constantly evoked and critical voices are vilified that are supposedly not patriotic. See also comparable scenes in Russia or Turkey, for example.

The demagogic way of operating in the Indian media is striking. This of course applies to the FOX-like, hysterical agitators on the right side of the spectrum. But also to NDTV itself.
