From the moment he co-founded the Hamburg Film Coop in 1967 until his death in January 2017, Werner Nekes was regarded as one of the world's foremost experimental filmmakers. His extensive oeuvre is closely associated with almost 40,000 optical devices, objects, images, anamorphoses, books and documents up to six centuries old. Like an archaeologist, he dug up and collected these items to explore film history as a history of the media, make it tangible and further develop it in his films.
