Weltstadt in Flegeljahren. Ein Bericht über Chicago plot

This quirky 'city symphony' is an ode to the American metropolis of Chicago. The documentary begins aboard a paddle steamer on the Mississippi. We see steamboats of all shapes and sizes and tour the farm life on the banks. Then we get to the city: trains and bridges, pedestrian streets, shop windows and lots of cars. Chicago was a fast-growing city at the time: factories and skyscrapers are rising, there is a bustling urban expansion. The population relaxes in parks, on the river beach, at the fair and the flea market. On the one hand, Hauser is in awe of Chicago's energetic growth, but on the other, he does not close his eyes to social abuses. The film also includes observations of slums and garbage dumps, of vagrants and addicts. In the 1930s, Chicago was characterized by unemployment, poverty and crime.
