"In Every War, There Are Invisible Wounds"
Doctors in the American Civil War called it "hysteria," "melancholy," and "madness." During World War I it was known as 'shell shock'. During World War II it was known as 'war fatigue'. Today it is clinically known as 'post-traumatic stress disorder' (PTSD), a paralyzing fear that results from exposure to life-threatening situations, such as war. With suicide rates on the rise among active military and veterans, this documentary urgently draws attention to these invisible wounds of war. Through revealing letters and diaries, soldiers' stories, their photos and recorded footage, first-hand interviews with World War II veterans (talking about their PTSD for the first time), the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and the Operation Iraqi Freedom, together with interviews of family members of soldiers with PTSD, a comprehensive picture is formed.
