Developing the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is the largest and most expensive international defense project of all time. The project is expected to cost just under $1.4 trillion worldwide. The JSF serves to replace the Dutch F16 fighter aircraft, which, according to the Royal Netherlands Air Force, are due for replacement. In Today We Buy an Airplane, director Robert Oey shows how, over a period of twenty years, eight cabinets, thousands of parliamentary questions and countless missions have been needed to make a political decision. In this film questions are asked to the American General Bogdan (the commander of the project), former Defense equipment man and former Commander of the Air Forces Dirk Starink, former CEO of Lockheed Martin and former Secretary of State of the US Department of Defense Norman R. Augustine, and a whole procession of Dutch top civil servants, soldiers, politicians and industrialists.
