Although singer-songwriter JJ Cale has always shunned publicity, his music is world famous and a source of inspiration for musicians such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton. In 'To Tulsa and Back' Cale goes back to the origins of the Tulsa Sound, of which he is considered the founder. The film makes it clear that the relaxed guitar sound and the subdued vocals match Cale's personality: a rare relaxed rock musician, averse to pretension. He talks about his youth, his wild years in California and his existence as a musician. All this intertwined with archive images, impressions of a recent concert tour and moody landscapes.
