Time plot

Desperation drove Sibil and Rob Richardson to a bank robbery in 1997, not far from a location where Bonnie and Clyde once operated. It earned them the dubious nickname 'the black Bonnie and Clyde'. The loot amounted to just over five thousand dollars. Sibil had to serve five years, but Rob was sentenced to sixty years. When Sibil was released after three years, she more than held up. Raising her six sons on her own, she developed – as Fox Rich – into a successful entrepreneur, rhetorical gun and spokesperson for the black community.

Garrett Bradley apparently wanted to show with this documentary that black men are part of a modern form of slavery in the form of imprisonment. This documentary focuses on Fox Rich, who has served her sentence for bank robbery but now battles the bureaucracy to get her complicit husband - who has been sentenced to 60 years in prison - out of prison early. Fox becomes a voice for many other black women in the same boat and provides a compelling analysis of how the prison system works. The only problem – and it is a very big one – is that we are dealing with a man who committed a serious crime and we do not know exactly how that crime happened. Fox of course believes that her husband deserves to be released, but as a viewer you cannot simply accept that as true. Bradley brings up interesting ideas, but this documentary is not convincing for a moment. Probably only got an Oscar nomination because the subject matter was topical. You wonder if the members of The Academy would have bothered to see this mediocre documentary.
