The number of black drivers who participated in the first 100 editions of the Tour de France can be counted on one hand. The best African cyclists come from Eritrea and this documentary follows the great promise Biniam Girmay who dreams of a professional contract in Europe and - the ultimate goal - participation in the Tour de France. Cycling enthusiasts undoubtedly know what Girmay has achieved, but that does not make this documentary any less interesting. No voice-over, no talking heads and (apart from a few dates and places) no background information. We see Girmay at home, with friends and family, and during the discussions, training and races in which he participates as a cyclist. The mix of visual styles and exceptional editing make this a fascinating, entertaining and candid look into the life of a professional cyclist.

Fascinating documentary that focuses on the person Bini and his life in Eritrea and his rise in Europe, making this documentary at least as interesting even for non-cycling enthusiasts.

Luckily I saw the long version. No idea where they would have cut. Cycling is of course the main theme of the documentary, but no cycling terms, exaggerated training or tactics, etc. are used. Also no testimonials from cycling managers or team leaders. The focus is entirely on Bini herself and that is a relief.

Nice how things were in Eritrea and Rwanda, nice and relaxed and with a dose of amateurism. Nice images! Also there in Aigle with the UCI's international youth program. The effort!
